Thank You Note ProtocolGifts do not require a thank you note if the gift is given in person and you thanked the gift giver. If the gift was sent to you, a thank you note is appropriate if only to let the gift giver know you received it. Some people expect a thank you note even when the gift is given in person so you would not be remiss in sending them to non-close friends and relatives.A thank you note should be hand written, preferably on stationary or a blank note card. The gift and the giver should be mentioned in the note. Instead of "Doug, thanks for the gift. We love it." write "Doug, thank you so much for the Debbie Mumm print. It looks great in our kitchen." Personalizing the thank you note lets the gift giver know you really appreciate the gift. Never email a thank you note! Take the time and expense to say thank you with a handwritten note that they can keep if they wish. When is it too late to say thanks? It is best to bring it up and apologize. The farther it is from when you received the gift the more profusely you apologize. It is never too late to say thanks!
